1973 Ford Escort 1300 L Estate

(History & Heritage)

History & Heritage

The Ford Escort Mk1 made its debut in late 1967 (officially launching at the 1968 Brussels Motor Show) to replace the aging Ford Anglia. While the two-door saloon variants quickly dominated British and European rallying scenes—becoming legends in motorsport—Ford also introduced practical body styles, including the three-door Estate variant that debuted in April 1968.

By 1973, the Escort Mk1 was at the peak of its popularity, nearing the end of its first-generation run before being succeeded by the Mk2 in 1975.

This newly introduced model is the 1300 L Estate. The “L” represented a mid-to-upper tier in the Escort lineup, offering more refined features such as carpeting, leather upholstery, armrests, and exterior chrome trim.

It is powered by the legendary British Kent Crossflow Engine of the era—simple in structure, robust, durable, easy to maintain, and remarkably reliable.

Featuring a traditional rear-wheel-drive layout combined with a live rear axle and leaf springs, surviving examples of this car still offer a wonderfully engaging driving experience today, while remaining exceptionally easy to restore or modify.

Surviving Rarity

Because estate cars were typically purchased as everyday workhorses, finding a clean, original 1973 Escort 1300L Estate today is even rarer than finding its saloon or two-door sporty siblings, making it a true treasure in the eyes of classic Ford collectors.
